Ardgillan Castle
Ardgillan Castle is situated on the elevated coastline between Balbriggan and Skerries and is unique among Dublin’s Regional Parks for the magnificent view it enjoys of the coastline. The park consists of 194 acres of rolling pasture land, mixed with woodland and gardens, overlooking the bay of Drogheda. Ardgillan, meaning High-wooded area, is a sanctuary for many species of mammals and birds for which the densely wooded grounds provide a safe retreat from surrounding agricultural land.
The Castle, the residence at Ardgillan, built in 1738 consists of two storeys over a basement which extends out under the southern lawns. Although referred to as Castle, the residence at Ardgillan is a large country style house with castellated embellishments. When occupied, the ground and first floors were the living accommodation while the west and east wings were servant’s quarters and estate offices. The basement was the service floor, the kitchen and stores. Ardgillan Castle has now been restored and the ground floor rooms and kitchens are open to visitors for guided tours. Tea rooms are located off the main reception area and serve light snacks. Upstairs the former bedrooms are used for classes and exhibitions including a permanent and unique exhibition of the 17th Century ‘Down Survey of Ireland’ colour maps and text.
Return to the city will take a scenic detour off the main road to the picturesque fishing village of Howth and around the coastal route, through Clontarf, back to the City.
